Find your way around the editor

pradedantiesiems

The plan, the 3D view, the tool rail and the sidebar — what each part of the screen is for, and how to move around in each.

6 min · get started

The editor is four things: a plan, a 3D view of it, tools on the left and details on the right. This lesson names them so the other lessons can.

The top bar

  • Back to models — the arrow at the far left returns you to your library.
  • The model name, and beside it the save status.
  • Undo and Redo — every change can be taken back (⌘Z, or Ctrl+Z on Windows).
  • Plan / Split / 3D — which views are on screen. Split shows both and is the one to work in; Plan gives the drawing the whole width; 3D puts the drawing tools away, because they act on the plan.
  • Terrain — on by default, this fuses everything you draw into one continuous ground surface. Switch it off and shapes stand as separate solid blocks instead.
  • Layers — hide whole kinds of things (objects, pins, scene photos) while you work on the ground.

The plan (left)

Every square of the grid is one metre. The buttons in its corners are about how the plan is drawn: a contour-map toggle, an outline-only toggle, Save view as image, a cog for grid lines, Rotate view 90° and Fit.

Moving around: scroll to zoom, hold Space and drag to pan (or drag with two fingers on a trackpad). Fit brings the whole plan back on screen.

The 3D view (right)

The same ground, standing up. Drag to orbit, Shift-drag or right-drag to pan, scroll to zoom. The button row in its corner has a cog for shadows and quality, Saved renders, Save this view as a PNG image, the photorealistic render and Reset the camera. Above the view is a row of tabs for saved camera angles.

The tool rail (left edge)

Select, Transform, then the drawing tools, then two buttons for placing objects. Under them, two chips set the fill colour and texture of whatever you draw next. Hover a tool for its name and keyboard key. Four more tools — pin, scene photo, measurement and terrain section — float over the plan's top-right corner while nothing is selected.

The sidebar (right)

From the top: Environment settings (canvas size, grid, the landscape you compare against), then the inspector for whatever is selected, then five tabs — Terrain, Structures, Plants, Paths, Light objects — with the list of shapes on the selected one. The footer holds Version history, Download and Clear plan.
